Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Building 85 Waste Handling Facility is responsible for sufficiently characterizing Hazardous, Radioactive, and Mixed Wastes at Berkeley Lab for off-site disposal. FTF served as Prime Consultant for the emergency waste generator replacement, ensuring continuity of operations during outages and compliance with DOE and UC seismic safety policies. FTF’s structural scope included seismic anchorage design and detailing for a new 25-ton waste generator and fuel storage tank, anchorage of the electrical distribution system and ancillary equipment, foundation engineering to support dynamic loading, and design of security fencing. As Prime Consultant, FTF also managed the project, coordinating the design consultants, including Burns & McDonnell, and providing consolidated, coordinated submittals.
