Vandenberg Space Launch Complex 8

Vandenberg Space Force Base, CA

Market: Institutional / Industrial

General Contractor: Diani Building Corp.

While at a previous firm, FTF Principal Jillian van Enckevort provided structural design and construction administration services for a 90-foot-tall mobile trussed steel tower that provides access to the vehicle while on the launch stand. The rail-mounted structure moves to a stowed position to allow for the launch of the rocket vehicle. Design included analysis for reduced wind loadings while in movement, as well as maximum wind and seismic loading while in the stationary position. The trussed tower consists of an inner stairwell with access to enclosed work platforms and a clean room. The platforms rotate vertically to allow movement of the tower away from the vehicle.

In April 2025, this project marked a milestone moment at Vandenberg Space Force Base and for Jillian! The 90-foot mobile steel tower visible in footage of the NROL-174 mission launch at Space Launch Complex 8 is the same tower Jillian designed. After nearly 14 years out of service, Vandenberg launched a rocket, and the tower performed flawlessly for the mission. A proud moment for Jillian and the FTF team!
