FIRE- & EARTHQUAKE-RESISTIVE CONSTRUCTION
FTF Engineering developed a concrete construction methodology applicable in high-seismic and fire prone zones to provide exposed concrete on both sides of an exterior wall while satisfying energy code requirements for insulation.
In collaboration with Aleck Wilson Architects and RJ Campi Construction, FTF designed an innovative “sandwich” assembly consisting of a thicker concrete layer for in-plane and out-of-plane structural support, a layer of rigid insulation for thermal separation, and a thinner concrete veneer secured to the structural wall. The technical details of the assembly were developed carefully with the contractor to facilitate cast-in-place methods achieving architectural finish specifications.
The result is a dramatic contemporary hillside home above a San Carlos canyon. Visually, the architects created a canyon within the compound, designing two buildings, one for public spaces and one for private spaces, joined by a pair of internal bridges taking advantage of the San Francisco Bay views.
