FTF is providing full structural engineering design and construction administration services for Kern Community College District’s new Agricultural Sciences Building at Bakersfield College. The nearly 50,000-square-foot, three-story facility features a rigid steel moment-frame system engineered to accommodate a sloping site. The building houses state-of-the-art laboratories supporting food, animal, plant, soil, and forestry sciences, along with two large lecture and computer classrooms and administrative office space for the agricultural department’s deans and faculty. To address the structure’s irregular geometry, FTF optimized the moment frame beams and columns to reduce steel tonnage while controlling torsional response. This delivered an efficient structural system without compromising performance.
