Collaboration in Santa Barbara

santa barbara

FTF Engineering is excited to announce our collaboration with Van Sande Structural Consultants (VSSC) in Santa Barbara. FTF’s San Luis Obispo team is currently supporting VSSC on a 2-story addition to the iconic Lobero Theatre, California’s oldest theater in continuous operation. The partnership is a natural fit, with both firms bringing experience across diverse project types, including single-family and multifamily residential, education, commercial, and civic and institutional work. We look forward to building on this relationship and supporting more projects in Santa Barbara together. Learn more about this project. | Photo by Jason Rick.

Napa apts

Construction of a 51-unit multifamily development in downtown Napa is now complete! These Napa apartments feature three buildings with a structural system that balances open, light-filled layouts with efficient seismic design. FTF collaborated with Urban Building Workshop and Pacific West Companies, incorporating innovative solutions to accommodate large window openings and integrated parking without compromising the residential layouts above. The completed development brings new housing to the area while showcasing thoughtful and efficient structural engineering. The Seismic Outreach program is inspiring the next generation of engineers through hands-on learning and mentorship. Through this initiative, engineering students visit elementary schools to teach students about earthquakes, structural engineering, and seismic design, then leave them with K’NEX kits to build their own model “skyscrapers.” The experience concludes with a campus visit, where students tour facilities, meet engineering students, and test their structures on a shake table. Originally launched at UC San Diego, the program is now being implemented at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for the first time. FTF Principal Randy Collins is working with UCSD Professor Van Den Einde, Wayne Chang, Sara Means, NCSEA, and other major contributors to help expand the program into a nationwide, volunteer-led STEM initiative.
