Seismic Outreach

FTF in the Community
The Seismic Outreach program is inspiring the next generation of engineers through hands-on learning and mentorship. Through this initiative, engineering students visit elementary schools to teach students about earthquakes, structural engineering, and seismic design, then leave them with K’NEX kits to build their own model “skyscrapers.” The experience concludes with a campus visit, where students tour facilities, meet engineering students, and test their structures on a shake table. Originally launched at UC San Diego, the program is now being implemented at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for the first time. FTF Principal Randy Collins is working with UCSD Professor Van Den Einde, Wayne Chang, Sara Means, NCSEA, and other major contributors to help expand the program into a nationwide, volunteer-led STEM initiative.
